Nigerians from all walks of life have commended the author of the book, “Owe, Yoruba by Proverbs”, Prof Anthony Kila, for his stride on cultural renaissance and vision.
They poured the praise on the author at the book launch recently, held at the Centre for International and Advanced Professional Studies (CIAPS), Ikeja, Lagos
Delighted by what he described as being consistent with Lagos State Government’s commitment to champion the revival of the Yoruba Language, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, commended Kila for packaging Yoruba proverbs in a book in order to sustain it.
Represented by the state’s Commissioner of Information, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, the Governor said “our mother tongue is our identity and a key component of our culture and tradition which must be passed on from one generation to another.’’
The book reviewer, Prof Bola Akinterinwa, says the book has clearly explained Yoruba as a language of communication, as a philosophy, as a methodology of life and as a solution-finding mechanism to critical societal problems.
The former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) further stressed that, the book, in a multi-dimensional manner helps to understand Yoruba in an international light and relation, noting that it is a major contribution to the understanding of the perception or genesis of humanity, especially from the prism of the Yoruba people.
On why he wrote a book on Yoruba proverbs, Kila says they provide insight into the Yoruba culture. His words, “The book is not really about language because what brought me today was simply my normal poise to seek ways and get a way to how societies and even our culture work. And proverbs became a very good way to get an insight into Yoruba culture.
”Because provides of all cultures have the benefit of letting you see the mindset of those that coin those proverbs . Proverbs are based on observation of what happens in daily life. They are built on thoughts. It is a combination of realities and analysis that build proverbs.’’
