A shipment carrying 90 tons of aid was en route to Venezuela on Wednesday night to support national response efforts for the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations said.
The cargo included 28,000 protective equipment kits for health workers on the front lines as well as supplies such as oxygen concentrators and water quality control products, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
The aid was financed by the international donor community and various UN agencies.
The once rich country is in a deep economic crisis and the health care system is in tatters, with massive shortages of medicines and supplies.
The country’s embattled president, Nicolas Maduro, on Wednesday said that 167 people have so far tested positive to the novel coronavirus, while nine deaths have been reported. (dpa)
