UNDP condemns treatment of human trafficking victims

The United Nation Development programme (UNDP), in a recent assessment of human trafficking in Nigeria, has condemned the human rights violations of victims and survival of trafficking in government Shelters establishment across the country.

The report shows that all Naptip shelters for victims of trafficking are closed, and restrict freedom of movement.

UN special rapporteur in Trafficking in persons, Maria Giammarinaso on Monday in Abuja, who presented her assessment after seven days visit to Nigeria, insisted that most shelters are not adequately managed and are grappling with under funding.

“If you look at it, victims of trafficking are only ones locked up even though they didn’t commit any crimes,” she said.
