A 37-year-old trader, Ada Obi, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Yaba Chief Magistrates Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining 30,000 bags of rice worth N24 million from one Miss Moriamo Dosunmu under false pretenses.
The accused, who lives in Ebute-Metta Area of Lagos, is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretenses, threat to life and stealing.
The prosecutor, Asp Romanus Uniugbe, told the court that the matter was reported at the Police station by the complainant, Dosunmu on Aug 13.
He said that the accused committed the offence on Aug 13 at Iddo Market, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Uniugbe said the accused, with others at large, had fraudulently obtained 30,000bags of rice from Dosunmu with the promise to pay back after the sales of the items.
Uniugbe said rather fulfilling his promise, the accuse failed to remit the money. He also said that Obi, threatened the complainant’s life after she insisted that her money be paid in full.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 56, 287, 314, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 314 stipulates 15 years jail for obtaining by false pretences.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adewale Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Ojo adjourned the case till Jan.18 for mention.
