The defending champion of Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Open Tennis Tournament, Abdulmumuni Babalola, was off to a fine start yesterday when he defeated Uche Oparoji 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the next round of the competition, while tournament 5th seed, Henry Atseyo beat Joseph Iyoroube 6-2, 6-1 to also move on to the next stage.
Men’s singles 3rd seed, Thomas Out, also justified his tournament ranking when he outstroked Taiwo Owolabi 6-4, 6-4.
Edward Christopher defeated John Henry 6-0, 3-0 (retired), as Augustine Nwokedi beat Ayuba Dauda 6-0, 6-3 to qualify for the round of 32.
Speaking after his match, Nwokedi confessed that he struggled to win his game as he was not in his best form. He however promised to improve in the next match which comes up today against tournament’s 5th seed, Henry Atseye.
Action will continue this morning in the men’s and women’s singles categories while those featuring in the doubles events will also be on the court today.
The wheel-chair category which will only be played in the round of 16 will serve off tomorrow at the Tennis Court of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
