President of the Nigeria Olympic committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Gumel, has declared that Nigeria’s contingent to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will not be in Brazil to complete the number of countries participating at the Games, but will compete effectively for medals.
Gumel made this declaration moments after a botched Budget Defence of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and its affiliates at the National Assembly on Wednesday in Abuja.
The NOC President, who was at the NASS Complex to defend the Budget of National Lottery Commission as its Executive Secretary, told the sporting media that the NOC is making frantic efforts to ensure that the shameful outing of the country at the London 2012 Games where she failed to win a medal does not repeat itself.
He said the NOC, NSC and the Federations are working in synergy to making sure that athletes’ preparations are not hindered for any reason, adding that the programmes are yielding dividends already.
He maintained that every allowance due to the athletes for their preparations would be disbursed to them at the appropriate time and pointed out that the country’s elite athletes are making waves at their various bases. Gumel revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan has empowered the Lottery Commission to purchase sporting equipment for primary schools across the nation.
