The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has appointed eight ambassadors for the Women’s World Boxing Championships holding in Astana, Kazakhstan.
“Insidethegames,’’ an online publication said on Friday that the ambassadors, named for the event, which would hold from May 19 to May 27, comprised female boxers, referees and judges.
It said the list featured British flyweight boxer Nicola Adams, a gold medalist at the London 2012 Olympics and Indian Mary Kom.
Others are an America Marlen Esparza, a flyweight bronze medallist at the London 2012.
Also named ambassadors are Brazil’s Adriana Araujo, a lightweight bronze medallist in the 2012 Games, Bulgaria’s Stanimira Petrova, the 2014 AIBA world bantamweight champion and Moroccan middleweight Khadija Mardi.
The publication named other appointees as Algeria’s Kheira Yakoub, who is the first female five-star official from AIBA and Canadian Jennifer Huggins, a three-star AIBA referee.
It stated that AIBA’s selection was based on their position as positive role models for aspiring boxers and women in general.
The publication disclosed that the tournament, which was earlier scheduled for Feb.1 to Feb. 14, was re-scheduled to give organisers more time to prepare. (NAN)
