The Senate, on Tuesday, commended military officers fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east and assured them of its total support to win the war.
The Senators said the military authority should count on its backing towards ensuring a successful war against the insurgents.
The Boko Haram militants announced, at the weekend, that it was affiliated to the Islamic State extremist group. Their comment came at a time the insurgents were suffering heavy losses at the hands of the Nigerian Armed Forces and its regional collaborators.
The Senators, who spoke at plenary, expressed great pressure to defeat a group that had killed thousands of civilians through gun attacks, suicide bombings, targeting markets, worship centres and schools. Boko Haram wants Nigeria turned into a hard-line Islamic state.
Speaking at the Plenary, Sen Ali Ndume (Borno North), said there was a clear difference in the fight against the insurgents now, than before.
“Political activities are now going on in some of our communities. Even residents are now seeing the difference in the war against Boko Haram. I urged the Senate to support the military fighting the insurgents so that the equipment they need to win the war are provided”, Ndume said.
