His Royal Highness the Emir of Kano Alh Muhammadu Sanusi II has in strong terms, condemned the activities of politicians and government officials for encouraging drug abuse among the youths in the country.
The Emir who described the war against drug abuse by Government as a mere lips service said that unless politicians stop engaging the services of drug addicts and thugs whom have found their ways into government pay roles as body guards whom are used to attack opponents nothing would be achieved.
Sanusi made the assertion on behalf of himself, Sultan of Sokoto and the Emir of Kazaure on Monday in Kano during a round table conference organized by the Senate in order to tackle the menace of drug abuse among our youths in the country.
According to him, “we are sitting on a time bomb as the leaders of tomorrow are gradually destroyed through drug abuse and their future completely destroyed.”
Sanusi further described those who supply youths with drugs and pay them to do all sorts of despicable things for them as criminals who should be prosecuted.
Furthermore, Sanusi opined that the Federal government should make it a priority to establish at least a rehabilitation center in each zone of the federation where victims would be cared for with the hope that they would be reintegrated into the society to be useful to themselves and the society at large.
” I am challenging the political office holders and security agencies in drug abuse. We deceive ourselves if we do not accept that we are part of these problems as such, we are sitting on a time bomb.”
This he said, is linked to the issue of lack of political will and failure on the part of the political class and government to handle or enforce the existing laws regulating the sale and distribution of controlled drugs”
Rather than formulating new laws and policies, the Emir suggests that the existing laws and policies governing the production, sale and distribution of drugs be revisited and properly applied.
