Reps Call For Security Emergency Over Herdsmen Attacks

Following the recent attacks by militant herdsmen, the House of Representatives yesterday called on the federal government and Kaduna State government to declare security emergency in Southern part of the state.

This followed a motion moved by Hon. Simon Arabo and five others.

The lawmakers urged the security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend and bring to justice all persons involved in the attacks, just as they called on the federal government to set up a military strike force in the Southern Kaduna senatorial district.

In his lead debate, Hon. Arabo noted that since 2011, various communities in Southern Kaduna have been consistently attacked by Fulani militants, resulting in deaths, injuries, loss of properties and displacement of communities.

He further noted that the herdsmen have occupied some of the displaced communities and urged the federal government to replicate what it did in Zamfara State when it declared a security emergency at the wake of similar terrorist attacks and set up a military strike force.

Arabo observed that the attacks on the communities indicate a pattern of deliberate desire to annihilate them, decimate their population, occupy their lands and generally create an atmosphere of terror.

According to him, a general atmosphere of insecurity pervades the communities, adding that some security personnel were in the area when the recent attacks took place.
