The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate plans by Anglo- Dutch Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to relinquish its interests in oil block OML 11.
This follows the unanimous adoption of the motion sponsored by Hon. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, complaining that the sale of OML 11 by Shell may be in contravention of the Local Content Act.
Based on the adoption of the motion, the House, on Tuesday, mandated its Committees on Local Content, Petroleum (Upstream) and Justice to invite the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke and the managing director of Shell to probe the bidding process of the sale of the oil block. Nkem-Abonta expressed the need for compliance with the Local Content Act in order to accommodate host communities in the proposed sale of OML 11 by Shell.
He added that the communities hosting the said oil block are the Gokana and Tai, two Ogoni communities and Adoni, Opobo and Bonny communities all in Rivers State, as well as the Oyigbo, Asa, Ukwa communities in Abia State respectively.
