Polls: Military are needed for elections, says Police Affairs Minister

The Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan, has said that no amount of condemnation would stop the use of police during the forth-coming elections.

He said this while featuring at an interactive programme anchored by the Association of Veteran Journalists (AVJ), in Osun State.

According to him, the use of military is to assist the
supervision, monitoring and ensuring free, fair and credible poll come March 28th and April 11.

While condemning the public outcry against the use of military for the forthcoming poll, Adesiyan said, “No amount of condemnation or involvement of the military will dissuade the Federal Government from using the military for the election. There is no country in the entire Africa continent where they do not use military for the election.”

He further explained military officers would be used to complement police in the handling electoral processes and matters in the country.

He, however, said the police force was already planning to recruit 25,000 additional hands into the Police Force.

“The military were called to participate in the elections to ward off hoodlums and vandals at polls and not to attack,” he added.

He also noted that the Federal Government has partnered with United Kingdom Metropolitan Police to train Nigeria Police in preparation of the March 28th Presidential Poll.

He stated that government was also making arrangements to purchase 5,000 operational vehicles for all the police formations across the country for the purpose of the elections.

He said, “The Federal Government has started taking delivery of the operational vehicles and allocating same to states of the federation.”

The Minister described the purported strike as rumour being orchestrated by the opposition.

He denied the allegation that the strike action was being sponsored by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) as justification for another shift in the poll, saying “how on earth that one would destroy his own house by himself”.
