Many people, including school children, sustained varying degree of injuries, when supporters of All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), clashed in Remo area of Remo North Local Government of Ogun State.
The clash, which occurred at the weekend, also led to the destruction of some vehicles, shops and billboards belonging to the PDP’s House of Representatives candidate, Remo Federal Constituency, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu.
An eye witness told our correspondent that the violence occurred when the campaign train of Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, moved to the local government, accompanied by the APC Senatorial candidate, Ogun East, Prince Dapo Abiodun and APC’s House of Assembly Candidate, Ikenne State Constituency, Olusola Sonuga walked across Iperu with their supporters to welcome the governor.
It was also gathered that during the walk, on the old Lagos-Ibadan road of the town, members of the two parties clashed and used dangerous weapons freely on each other.
During the mayhem, people scampered for safety, while some innocent people, including school children, who had just closed from the school, reportedly sustained various degrees of injury in the process.
Reacting, the Chairman, People’s Democratic Party, Ikenne Local Government, Gboyega Ogunfowokan, accused members of the APC of master-minding the violence.
His words: “The PDP remains law-abiding and will always be of good conduct, despite several provocation and record of various attacks among which was the January 17, 2015 incident, when our secretariat at Ikenne was vandalised, where various items including the party flags were destroyed”.
The Chairman, Media and Publicity of Amosun Campaign Organisation, Femi Sowoolu, said the violence was not master-minded by the APC members.
He said, the governor was too busy with his work to have time for violence, saying, the APC was on ground, does not need to unleash violence on the people of the state.
According to him: We are totally focused. We are peaceful. We are on ground. We have government that performs.
