Police uniforms not for brutality of civilians – AIG

The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone IX, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, has said the police uniforms does not give freedom to policemen to brutalise civilians.

The AIG said this while addressing some policemen at a workshop  organised by the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo on Monday‎.

He also urged the Nigerian Police to imbibe the attitude of encouraging people to embrace peace at all time.

The AIG asked police to avoid bias when handling cases, saying that Civilians are good sources of getting facts.

He said, “I would want to use this medium to advise you all that your uniforms should not serve as an opportunity for you to brutalise the people. Some of you are fond of it, which at the end of the day you find it difficult to relocate to your home land due to the fact that you have already militated their lives while you were in uniforms.”

Ikemefuna urged that Nigerian police to be moderate in dealing with civilians in the forth-coming elections.

He also warned them against getting themselves involved in politics before, during and after the elections.

He said, “We should not see  the forthcoming election as an avenue to arbitrate our duty but should view it as a platform to execute their duty professionally.

“Election should be seen as a platform for ‎the police force to carry out their duty professionally. Your only business is to monitor and prevent any form of violence during the election.”

Osun State  Commissioner for police, Mr. Abubakar Marafa, said the command recorded low crime rate as a result of proper strategies being put in place to fight crime.

While saying that policemen in the state were ready for the elections, Marafa added, “As part of our efforts towards the coming elections, officers of the command have been trained on how to be courteous, polite, fair and professional before during and after the period.
