A physiologist, Mr Ademola Ajayi, on Sunday, said regular physical exercise has been proven to increase longevity and improve overall quality of life.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that there was a need for increased awareness on the importance of physical activity.
“Millions of people continue to practise a sedentary lifestyle, in spite of the wide array of physical activities that are of benefit to the human body and health.
“The health benefits of physical activity are seen not only in adults but also in children and older people.
“Adults of all sizes and shape gain health and fitness benefits through physical activity, so it’s independent of a person’s body weight,’’ he said.
Ajayi said that some benefits of regular physical exercise included prevention of premature death, reduction in the risk of obesity, as well as improved cardio-respiratory health and functional ability.
