Delta state governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has said part of the success of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in deepening democratic values and institutions gave the All progressive Congress the chance of existence.
Dr Uduaghan who was the guest speaker at the 2nd National Public Service Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association held on Friday at the Trenchard Hall of the University with a title Good governance, a catalyst for development in Nigeria said “Had PDP not been so successful in deepening democratic values and institution, there will be no APC as opposition about taking over office”.
‘ I know PDP can be criticised for many things but this party which did not exists before 1998 came together and with many strange bedfellow was able to stabilizes the polity and began the process of massive economic reforms that has never been seen before in Nigeria”
He said further that “As far as I know, PDP is a true national party, APC was a vehicle to capture power, APC has to be tested before it can become a national party “
Highlighting on the achievements of the PDP Dr Uduaghan said “ for the records, PDP government initiated reforms in telecommunication, agriculture, power sector, expansion and reforms of infrastructures such as road, airport, seaport, manufacturing and rebasing of our economy showing the growth of our GDP as being largest in Africa”.
While expressing Optimism that PDP will bounce back, the governor called on the party leaders to reinvent, reorganize and re-imagine it.
“The PDP has to show that it is a party of credible leaders with robust and visionary programmes.
As opposition party, the PDP has to be effective as a party and as the conscience of the nation. “Gone are the days when party leaders boasted that the party would hold on to the reins of power for sixty years , it took only sixteen years for that dream to collapse.
This is not time to despair, this is time for hardwork I call on all committed, knowledgeable and mature leaders to step forward to pick up the pieces.
If the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress could do it in Ghana, the PDP could yet bounce back, it has resources to do so, we may have lost the election but let us not lose the lesson of the defeat.
Speaking on the lecture title, Dr Uduaghan emphasized on credible leadership saying “Good governance is hinged on good vision, good governance in our country at this time can only come through a credible leadership that would govern through leadership principles that represent the overall interest of Nigeria. “ one of such principle is accountability and transparency, Government exists for the people and everyone must be carried along. The president and governors are mere caretakers and should therefore give account of that which they have saddled with.
Earlier in his welcome address the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan Professor Isaac Fawole said the choice of governor Uduaghan is appropriate base on his experience and understanding of good governance which he has demonstrated as the governor of Delta state.
“ Dr Uduaghan is an apostle of good governance and advocate of peace”. He concluded.
Highlight of the lecture include presentation of Honorary membership award to the governor by the Alumni Association, presentation of schorlarship award to 26 first class student at the University and the presentation of Humility Award by the National Association of Delta State Student Union .
