Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, at weekend, flagged off the waste to wealth programme of the Federal Government in Abia State.
Performing the programme in Umuahia, Onu said it will help convert the huge waste in cities and rural areas in the state into wealth through the deployment of appropriate technology.
According to him, what is waste in one household can become wealth, adding that time will come when people will start paying for the waste generated in the state.
Abia, Dr. Onu said, was chosen as pilot state because the spirit of enterprise of the Abia man is what the country needs to grow her economy in a sustainable manner, maintaining that the Federal Government is committed to accelerating the pace of national development using science, technology and innovation.
He also stated that science and technology will be deployed to improve the environment, feed the citizens and restore confidence of the people on government as well as enhance the economy, pointing out that if well harnessed, the programme will convert waste into useful products to promote the happiness of the people.
Onu used the opportunity to laud the collaboration between Abia State government and the Ministry of Science and Technology and appealed to Nigerians to support the programme to ensure its success.
