Observers tasks security on neutrality during Kano re-rerun

A coalition of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accredited observers has called on security agencies to remain neutral while discharging their duties during gubernatorial supplementary election in Kano state.

Spokesperson of the coalition of 13 civil society groups, Amb. Chinyere Manukwem hailed the electoral umpire for its preparedness to conduct credible and hitch-free supplementary election.

The coalition also charged politicians to caution their supporters on the need to maintain peace and order during and after the election.

“Having arrived the state, we have interacted with the electorate, critical stakeholders, security agencies and INEC to ascertain the level of preparedness for the election,” the spokesperson stated.

She said their observations indicated that “INEC is fully prepared for a free, fair and credible election as the electoral materials are being moved to all the affected areas.

“We call on security agencies to abide by the electoral laws of the land to remain neutral, and also protect the citizenry during and after the election.

“We call on political leaders and their faithful to ensure a peaceful election and to respect the electoral law as they go out to perform their civic responsibilities and also be reminded of the peace accord signed by the parties.

“We also call on the electorate to go out en masse and cast their votes and remain law abiding. Finally, we commend the state government for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere so far for a peaceful election.”
