The Government of Niger State, on Tuesday, reaffirmed its commitment to promote press freedom, saying that press is the main crux for ensuring freedom of expression and engaging the people for open and transparent governance.
This was contained in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Tourism and Culture, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, to mark the world press freedom day in Minna, Niger State capital.
Vatsa assured that the present administration in the state would respect the press as the fourth estate of the realm, while partnering with it to lubricate participatory governance as well as ensure accountability in the fight against corruption to achieve development.
The statement read in part, “The government is desirous to always promote freedom of expression as a way of allowing the people to contribute to the process of governance and make correction when necessary for the overall development of the state.
“At this auspicious time of the world press freedom day, the government of Niger State under the leadership of Abubakar Sani Bello is assuring all practicing Journalists in Niger state of the commitment of the government to providing the right avenue, legally and genuinely possible, to continue to discharge their duties.”
