Niger, Benue qualify for Milo Basketball National finals

Government Secondary School, Minna emerged winners of the male category at the Confluence Conference of the 2017 Milo Basketball Championship, which held at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja.

They defeated Government Secondary School, Gboko, 46 – 14 and now looking forward to lifting the trophy at the National finals coming up in Lagos next month.

On the female category, Government Secondary School, Gboko, were crowned champions of the Confluence Conference, after defeating their Kaduna counterpart, Girls Science Secondary School, Kwoi.

The wins clinched at the Confluence Stage of the 2017 Milo Basketball Championship means the young boys from Niger State and the young girls from Benue State will be representing the Confluence Conference at the 2017 Milo Basketball Championship National Finals in Lagos, respectively.

It was a fiercely contested game between all the teams in the Confluence Conference which consist of the hosting State, Kogi, and eight other States which include Benue, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Katsina, and Plateau.

Speaking after the finals, the Kogi State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Arome Adoji, congratulated all the participating students as he refers to them as champions who came to Lokoja to make their various States proud.

“I can see the zeal and passion of these young boys and girls that will make them excel in the future, not only in sports but in their life endeavours,” Adoji said.

He further commented on the tournament by commending Nestle Nigeria for creating such platform for secondary school students in the country. He expressed delight to witness this great rewarding initiative.

“I am happy to see how talented and passionate the students are, the better school of the two finalists won and deserved to represent the state at the National Finals,” he remarked.

Also speaking at the event, the Kogi State Commissioner for Education, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. M.K Okpanachi expressed his profound gratitude to Nestle Nigeria Plc for supporting Nigerian youths and grassroots sports through the basketball championship.
