An unidentified girl was on Sunday beaten to death and set ablaze by irate youths for refusing to surrender herself to stop-and-search mounted at one of the entrance gates into Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi.
Daily Times reports that the victim came to the gate but refused to be searched with metal scanner by those authorised to do so. The victim’s refusal angered those around who suspected her to be on a suicide mission by the Boko Haram sect.
The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Haruna, confirmed the incident to newsmen. He added that police patrol teams, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, rushed to the scene, dispersed the mob and restored normalcy in the area. However, it was too late to save the girl.
Mohammed added that investigation and intensive patrol are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The command warned members of the public against taking laws into their hands as anyone arrested will face the full wrath of the law.
