MFM run over Cup holders Akwa Utd

Cup holders Akwa United continued their recent poor run in the Nigeria Professional Football League as they capitulated 0-3 to the pressing style of new boys MFM FC on Saturday.
With their Belgian head coach, Maurice Cooreman, suspended by the club, his assistant, Ere Dokubo, assumed a caretaker role but under pressure that he must impress in three matches starting with the game against MFM at the Agege Stadium.
MFM FC, without first-choice striker Musa Newman, showed no sign of missing their target man as Monday Shinshima combined well with Olatunbosun Sikiru and Stephen Odey upfront. Not even the embarrassment of jerseys clashing and switching into another set of shirts could hamper the flowing football produced by MFM FC on the night.
The Promise Keepers found it difficult to keep up with the short passes, pace and high-pressing style of MFM FC with midfielder Chukwuka Onuwa orchestrating almost every move.
Dokubo’s team then suffered a big blow when Yusuf Adio, who was their best player in the middle of the park and had stifled the creativity of Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Onuwa to some extent, had to be taken off injured for Ini Akpan just before the half hour mark.
Fourteen minutes after Adio’s departure, MFM scored from a fine team move. Onuwa flicked the ball over Akwa United’s defence to send Olatunbosun through and the winger made no mistake with his weaker right foot to score past Bassey Akpan in goal.
Poor defending on 67 minutes by Akwa United ensured that Odey peeled off his marker to head away from close range to double MFM’s lead.
Olatunbosun added the third with seven minutes before time to become the second side after Enugu Rangers to inflict a three-nil defeat on Akwa United this season in all competitions.
