The national president of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Dr Nnamdi Ilodiuba has urged Akwa Ibom sate house of assembly to ensure quick consideration and passage of the bill establishing state safety commission, currently before the house.
Ilodiuba spoke over the weekend during the 2017 induction of new members and safety summit of the body held at Ibom e-library along IBB avenue, Uyo.
The summit had as its theme: “Enhancing industrialization and development through effective safety culture in Nigeria: The roles of safety professionals”.
He said, “I am delighted to note that Akwa Ibom state government is among the few states that are pioneering the enactment of relevant laws and creation of strong and statutory commission to oversee safety management and practice within its domain.
I am reliably that the bill for the establishment of Akwa Ibom state safety commission currently in the house of assembly has already passed the second ready, in light of this, i appeal for the quick consideration and passage to enable the citizens begin to enjoy the inherent benefits”.
He revealed that the institute has a vast reservoir of highly qualified, intelligent, resourceful and experience persons with the right capacity to provide the technical and political leadership of the envisaged safety commission that will not only meet but exceed the expectations of government.
The president however commended Akwa Ibom state government for creating a unit within the governor’s office for emergency and disaster management and for the inclusion of the institute’s members to serve in the unit, saying this will give ample opportunity for early detection and prevention of disaster occurrence, as well as providing a framework for systematic and management of disaster in line with global standard.
The state chairman of the institute, Elder Peter Jimmy expressed happiness that for the first time, several members of the institute in the state have been elevated to the status of “fellow of the institute”, adding that many others have been trained, certify and imparted with the right capacities in the areas of health, safety and environment.
During the summit, about 38 persons were inducted into the institute, while 13 other members were upgraded to fellows of the institute.
