Why we honour our scholars – Unique Height

Management of Unique Height School, Isheri-Magodo, Lagos has reiterated its commitment to encourage excellent academic performance through hard work among students.

Speaking at the Honour Roll Award/Inauguration of prefects held at the school compound recently, Principal, Mrs. Oluwafunmilayo Olatubode, said the essence is to motivate and sensitise the students to be at their best in their academic endeavours.

“What we do is to honour the brilliant students with the blue ties to differentiate them from the other students who wear red ties which is the normal tie for the school uniforms. At the beginning of each session, students are encouraged to set achievable goals that will make them stand out. The Blue tie is an honour given to students in the Junior Secondary School who must have scored ‘As’ in 10 or more subjects including English Language and Mathematics while those in the Senior school would have scored ‘As’ in seven or more subjects including English and Maths,” she said.

Olatubode stressed further that the Unique Scholar Award stands for an extra-ordinary well educated student, saying the essence is to motivate the brilliant students to remain focused and consistent thus remaining at the top.

“When we began about four years ago, we had about 19 students who qualified for the Scholars Award, today we have 31 of them qualified. What we have achieved is that a healthy competition now arose between the weak and brilliant students. The weak ones are struggling to get to the top and snatch the baton from the brilliant ones while the brilliant ones are also struggling not to lose the baton to them”, she said.

The school also used the occasion to inaugurate new prefects who will be at the helm of affairs of their mates in the next one year.

Proprietress of the school, Mrs Esther Ayere-Alatise, congratulated the awardees and the prefects and urged other students to always strive for excellence.

One of the awardees, Lambo Joseph, who also doubles as the Assistant Head Boy, said he felt proud as a scholar once again having been a scholar since he joined the school five years ago, adding that his ultimate goal is to be the Best student in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in the whole federation.
