A voluntary group, the Coalition of Patriots (CP), has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on its use of the Smart Card Readers in last Saturday’s mock election and described it as a good innovation, which tallied with global best practices.
In a communique, issued to journalists on Sunday, in Akure, the Ondo state capital, the group said that the SCR was a welcome development and criticised those opposed to its use for the forthcoming general election as enemies of progress.
The communique signed by Ifesanmi Akinwoye, Wemimo Falana, Pastor Funmi Agagu, Nelson Mafo, Olajide Ajayi, and Elder Adamu stated that since the card readers would ensure credible and transparent election, they should be encouraged and not opposed by the critics.
The group warned opponents of the card readers to desist from tarnishing the name of the country through petty politics stressing that such action had given the international community negative impression.
While warning against another shift of the general elections, the group said there was nothing wrong with the deployment of soldiers for the elections to provide security, only if they would be not be used to intimidate opposition parties members.
It also saluted efforts of the military at combating the dreaded Boko Haram insurgency mostly in the north- eastern part of the country, which had been under attacks in the past six years.
