Most of the Chinese investment delegation is visiting Nigeria for the first time. But they have ended up changing negative impression of the country held from afar.
Pansy Liu is Chairman of the Investment Association of China Overseas Investment Union (IACOIU). She is also Director of China’s National Development and Reform commission. Liu has been to many countries, but this is her first time in Nigeria. “Nigeria is totally different from what she heard from the media, much better,” she says, adding that Abuja is a “young and beautiful city.”
Zhao jin Huang, also a first timer in Nigeria, agrees. Nigeria is much better than other African countries, he said. Zhao also has words of praise for Abuja’s wide and neat roads.
Another first timer, Yuan song Feng, the group’s Vice President, is not different in his appraisal. He noted the clear blue skies and fresh air on a sunny Sunday. Yuan commended Nigerians for being warm to strangers, saying that they are “hospitable and friendly,” especially after a Nigerian offered him a drink unsolicited.
Only one first timer dissented. Zhao Jiantao, Chairman of the Board of Zhengzhou East drilling Additive Co, was disappointed that Abuja had “no skyscrapers unlike in China.” He concluded, “This is not good enough.”
