Calvary Baptist Church in Osogbo,Osun State capital was on Thursday engulfed with fire, which resulted to the damage of valuable properties.
It was gathered that the fire outbreak which occurred around 12am, emanated due to a damaged power surge.
When our correspondent visited the church, a portion of the building had fallen to form shards.
Eyewitnesses said the damage was much because fire fighters could not make it to the scene when a call was put across to them.
Chairman of the benevolent committee, Mr. Ademola Ojo, said it was unfortunate that the incident occurred.
He noted that the church members had no sign that such an incident may occur when they finished a service around 8 pm on Wednesday.
Ademola said, ” We were here yesterday night to worship God, which we concluded about 08pm. We all went home without any sign not until around 12 am when the security men put a call over to inform us that the church was on fire.”
On his part, the church Public Relation Officer, Oluwaseun Ibitoye, said that the fire was suspected to have originated from the church power surge.
Ibitoye explained that though the fire claimed no life, a number of properties were burnt to ashes.
He said, “While the church was on fire we quickly rushed down to see how we actually call the fire fighters to come to our rescue and some members even went there but they told us that all their vehicles was down.”
