The Federal Government has announced the establishment of a technological driven agricultural centre to provide up to date – one stop data base of the information centre of the agricultural market environment.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Bukar Hassan at the ministry complex in Abuja on Monday while declaring open a 3 -day Capacity Building Workshop on Operationalization of Market Information Centre for participants drawn from 36 states’ offices of the Ministry and the Federal Capital Territory .
He explained that it is important for government to promote agricultural market information in order to aid investment, production, processing, marketing and exportation of agricultural produce out of the country to promote economic growth in line with the Economic Recovery Program of the present administration.
He said: “The one- stop Agricultural Market Information Centre is equipped with up to date facilities comprising the reception, work station, conference room and library to respond to the need of the public in market intelligence as well as directly and indirectly help drive production, processing and marketing in the agriculture sector thereby facilitating wealth creation, employment generation and ensuring food security.
“It is therefore apparent that investors, marketers and exporters of agricultural export produce from Nigeria would need a more reliable single point of contact to facilitate tailored agricultural market information support services and high quality market data for informed investment decision making across the agricultural value chains”.
The Permanent Secretary also revealed that as time goes on with demand and growth in Agriculture, there will be regional office centers which will now be collating and forwarding necessary information to the head office.
The Director Agribusiness and Market Development, Alhaji Musibau Azeez in his welcome address said the objective of the capacity building workshop is to provide necessary skills for participants to collect, collate, analyze, transmit and disseminate relevant agricultural information related to agricultural commodities prices through the web based platform to all stakeholders which would be useful to take wise investment decision in entire agricultural value chain.
Alhaji Azeez who was represented by a Director in the Department, Engineer Daniel Udoh observed that the establishment of the Agricultural Market Information Centre would bridge the hitherto gap on setting up of a comprehensive platform where all relevant stakeholders in agriculture could access information soliciting for the full participation of participants.
