Ekiti Varsity Teachers Begin Strike Over Two Month Salary Arrears

Lecturers at the Ekiti State University (EKSU) have commenced an indefinite industrial action over non-payment of their two-month salaries.

A visit to the university campus on Tuesday showed that all the lecturers stayed away from work as their offices were shut.

The university teachers acting under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed that they would not return to the classrooms until their salaries are paid.

There was no academic work at lecture rooms and theatres while some students who showed up in classes were busy reading.

The university teachers are enraged that government has not offered any explanation for the non-payment of their January and February salaries.

The EKSU-ASUU Chairman, Prof. Olufayo Oluodo, said the academic staff had no option than to stay away from work because non-payment of their salaries have made life difficult for them.

Oluodo said: “Our members have no money again to be moving up and down, we are being owed two months and we have not been paid at all this year.

“We have made our position known to the university authorities and we have written to the state government on the matter.

“We have met with the Deputy Governor to resolve the matter and another meeting with government has been slated for tomorrow.”

Following the declaration of strike by ASUU, other unions in the university-the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU)-have also declared indefinite strikes to protest non-payment of their January and February salaries.

SSANU Chairman Kolawole Falade and NASU Chairman Tope Akanni said they are also going on indefinite strikes to press home their demand for the payment of the two-month arrears of their salaries.

They called on the authorities concerned to ensure the payment of their salaries to make life easy for them and their defendants.
