The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) on Monday called on the President-elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari to make education his major focus in Nigeria’s quest to become a major global economy.
The National Vice President (West), Mr Alfred Jimoh made the call in Lagos.
Jimoh said that having been a one-time president of the country, Buhari was in a position to have a better understanding of the needs of the sector and its strategic place in national development.
According to him, for a nation to attain its dreams of becoming a top economy as well as be respected among comity of nations, it must have a sound education sector that will enhance human capital development.
“Gen Buhari seems to understand the system and that education, among other key sectors, is one of the areas he would strive to turnaround, when he takes over the mantle of leadership.
“Currently there are many challenges be-devilling the sector which need urgent intervention.
“We congratulate him on his victory as the incoming president of our great country but having said this, we would like him to, on getting into office, to quickly settle down to work.
“We actually want a situation where he would quickly convene a meeting of stakeholders in the sector, in order to bring to the table all burning issues and come out with a lasting solution.
“Such meeting will in no small measure bring about the desired change that has been long expected in the entire sector and therefore the long expected national transformation and development attained,” he said.
