Edo schools square up in Rugby friendlies

In preparation for the much-talked about Edo State Rugby Schools Championship scheduled for June, the respective schools involved in the on-going “Catch Them Young” Rugby Pilot Program are bubbling with excitement following the recent donation of Rugby balls to the respective 10 selected schools by the newly appointed Chairman of the Edo State Rugby Association and Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc Frank Evbuomwan.
According to the coordinator of the World Rugby School’s program tagged “Get into Rugby” in Edo State, who is also the World Rugby Educator for Nigeria and Head Coach of Edo State Rugby Association, Ntiense Williams he confirmed that the championship is holding this month.
Williams revealed that the schools have arranged Rugby friendly matches among themselves to test their strength before the Tournament. This is also in celebration of Coach Jeremiah Imbue’s Birthday who has been their motivator.
From the fixtures made available to Extra Time, Idia College locked horns with Emotan Collage on Tue May 31 at Idia College grounds.
The second match will witness Ihogbe College Girls squaring up against idia College Junior Girls today. The third scheduled match will see Ihogbe Boys playing Prison School Boys also today, while Niger College Boys will trade tackles with Ogbe Boys same day.
In ensuring that the students meet up with World Rugby standards as regards safety, Evbuomwan has graciously promised to donate Rugby First-Aid Kits to all participating schools.
There are 10 Schools involved in the pilot program drawn from Primary, and Secondary schools for both male and female categories.
Edo State is the back-to-back defending female national champions; they state won four gold medals at the National Sports Festival Rugby events, a feat yet to be broken by any other state in the federation.
Meanwhile, the official inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed sports association board members in Edo State will come up on Wednesday June 8, 2016 by 10am at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
