The governorship campaign at Igueben Local Government Area of the state took a new dimension last week as a stalwart of All Progressives Congress (APC), in the area, Mr. Osagie Ugboko, narrowly escaped death.
Giving his ordeal, Ugboko recalled he had travelled to the village for his usual sensitisation visit, but was attacked while on his way back to Benin-City by a group of unknown gunmen suspected to be agents of a political party in the state.
He alleged that it was a calculated attempt to subdue the APC in the area and throw members into disarray.
His words, “It was on my way back home after visiting the village that a C class Mercedes Benz overtook me and tried forcing me to stop even when the road was clear. I managed to look through its back windshield and discovered the car was conveying a group of young men appearing to be returning from a PDP rally.
“At that point, I ran past them. The next thing was a gunshot that deflated my tyre and forced me into the bush before Igbanke town. I thank God I was strong enough to have escaped before their arrival, but the fearful part of it was that they collected nothing from my car”.
The Toyota Highlander car the victim was driving was said to have been badly damaged with no traces of the assailants.
However, the victim stated that the incident had been reported to the police, but when the Daily Times called the spokesman of the state policcommand, DSP Theodore Okafor for confirmation, he promised to get back shortly. He never did and all calls to his phone were unanswered.
