Costa selfie causing Bundesliga officials to question celebration guidelines

The Brazilian took to the sidelines to snap a shot of himself and friends following a goal, and people are divided on the issue in several ways

Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa went viral after celebrating his goal against Gladbach with a sideline selfie on Saturday, but the act itself has caused controversy amongst fans and officials alike.

Some onlookers questioned the ethics of the act, as Costa’s sportsmanship has been brought into the spotlight for perhaps acting disrespectfully to Saturday’s opponents.

Others, however, have questioned the legality of the celebration to the point that now match officials have had to involve themselves in the discussion.

Referee Dr. Jochen Drees told ARD Radio: “For us, it depends on whether he has climbed a fence or made derogatory gestures. There’s nothing in the rule book that says he can’t take a selfie – I actually think it’s a nice thing.”

It is possible, though, that the German FA will step in, with Drees adding to Bild: “I assume that in the coming days us referees will receive instructions on exactly how to deal with these situations in future.”
