Business Connexion (BCX) has donated a computer laboratory to The League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ‘let me learn initiative’, to align with the South African government’s goals of education for all.
The initiative is to advance the lives of those less fortunate through information technology. LOFOB is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) situated in Grassy Park, Cape Town that provides a wide range of independence development services to partially sighted and blind people. Having first opened their doors almost 82 years ago, the NGO works tirelessly to assist and integrate visually impaired individuals into society through programmes designed to offer them opportunities to be employable.
The computer laboratory is designed to offer learners computer skills, through software designed by BCX that has a voice instructor which ensures learners take themselves through the programme without the assistance of an educator.
Eleven learners with ages ranging from 20 to 40 years come to the laboratory on a daily basis to take the computer course. Most hope to move on to become switchboard operators or data capturers post the course.
Group Manager, Marketing Operations and Corporate Social Responsibility at Business Connexion Arnold Beyleveld said: “Education is an important aspect of our society and at BCX we are passionate about changing lives with what we do best. To enrich communities by making the impossible possible through technology is not just a statement to us; it is what we strive for. LOFOB is an example of the magnitude of the impossibilities we wish to make possible.
“Business Connexion computer labs have been rolled out to a number of schools around the country, which we support on an ongoing basis to ensure sustainability. These computer labs come fully equipped with advanced technologies that will provide educators and students with immediate connectivity — making critical communications possible in challenging and diverse environments.
“We partner with schools to determine their specific needs and challenges and develop a solution to address these needs, and each solution can be implemented in an existing classroom structure or a temporary classroom structure. LOFOB is one school whose needs we identified and were able to address,” Beyleveld added.
