At the ongoing COPA Coca-Cola U-15 football journey, football teams in the Western Region group received a confidence boost ahead of their qualifying matches, when ex-international footballer, Mutiu Adepoju visited the training camp at the 2016 COPA Coca-Cola coaching clinic.
The COPA football players were in Ibadan, Oyo State to represent their various states at the COPA Coca-Cola Regional group stage after emerging champions from Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos and Ogun State respectively. On seeing Adepoju, the kids showed so much excitement, and were encouraged by his motivational talk. They were also appreciative of the various football training facilities provided for them by the beverage giant, Coca-Cola.
The ex-footballer who was popularly known as ‘The Headmaster’ during his days on the soccer pitch was accompanied to the COPA training clinic by former Shooting Stars FC player and coach, Babatunde Odubola to put the players through on-field drills and gave some words of advice to help guide their aspirations and budding football careers.
The training session gave the teams an outlet for their talent and enthusiasm for the upcoming matches which promised to be tough as four different champions will battle out to produce one champion to join seven others at the National finals in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, Marketing Director, Coca-Cola, Patricia Jemibewon expressed her satisfaction with the turnout at the coaching clinic, and the obvious excitement of the teens.
“Coca-Cola strongly believes in the potential of Nigerian teens and we are well aware that one of these greatest passions of these teenagers is football so we wanted to come up with a way to provide sport education and development for them,” she said.
Ex-international, Adepoju, who appeared in three World Cups for Nigeria said the initiative brought memories of how he started his footballing career, and after many hours of training with these kids, he revealed that Nigeria has a lot of talented footballers and thanked Coca-Cola for helping the country nurture these talents.
After the match day 3, Rockford College of Lagos emerged as the winner from the group after staying unbeaten, defeating their counterparts from Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun State. The team will proceed to Lagos State for the 2016 COPA Coca-Cola National finals.
