As the struggle for 2019 election intensifies, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Uturu Isiukwuato Local government Area of Abia State, Chief Amechi Ukoro, has said the combined ticket of the former vice- president Atiku Abubakar and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is the most viable option for the party.
Chief Ukoro told newsmen in Onitsha, Anambra State commercial nerve centre that the combination of the two was the perfect match PDP needed to wrestle power from APC in 2019.
He said Atiku as the head of Musa Yar’Adua Political dynasty, which later became PDM, that formed substantial part of PDP and a former vice – president of the country has the political contacts and reach among the political class in the country that will clinch victory for the party.
Ukoro said Atiku would no doubt be acceptable in the North, where he hails from and South East, South South, South West and, where he is believed to have large followers.
The PDP chieftain said it was only Atiku who can equal Buhari`s towering height in the North and other parts of the country.
“Atiku is one of the first class politicians in the country. He is the only person who cannot be intimidated by these hawks. And that is why some are vehemently opposed to his ambition because they know he cannot be their stooge” said Chief Uhoro.
For Ekweremadu, he said, apart from being the highest PDP political office holder in the country, he has demonstrated enough courage, political sagacity and steadfastness in the face of intimidating forces of Muhammad Buhari.
He said it was through the uncompromising principle of Ekweremadu that PDP recovered from its coma to bounce back to a viable party that is now angling for presidency in 2019
Ukoro said if not because Ekweremadu led few others in the Senate to say no, APC would have snuffed life out of the party and there will be no PDP today for anybody to aspire for any political positions.
“Ekweremadu is not a typical Nigeria politician. In the midst of pressure when Buhari took over, he kept the flag flying. That has earned him tremendous respect from Nigerians across the country. He is an asset to PDP.”
Ukoro said Ekweremadu having stayed in the Senate for more than 20 years, out of which 12 years he would have been a deputy senate President has given him a wide range of experience and contacts in the country.
But more than that the chieftain said Ekweremadu has political base that will help his party clinch victory in the election since the South East is predominantly PDP.
