Kebbi records first Lassa fever case

The head of clinical services of the Federal Medical Center, Birnin Kebbi, Dr. Teslim Lawal has confirmed the first Lassa fever case in Kebbi State. Teslim gave the confirmation at the Federal Medical Center, Birnin Kebbi when Daily Times visited to confirm the rumour making the rounds in the state capital. He said that the signs manifested when the patient under observation began to urinate blood; his blood sample was taken to the Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) where he tested positive of Lassa fever. “Soon as the patient was confirmed positive the hospital authorities quarantined the patient to avoid the risk of its spread and health professionals of the Centre managed and treated the patient that was discharged on Friday,” the Doctor said. For professional reasons Teslim refused to mention the name of the patient but added that another one is under observation by the centre. Kebbi state ministry of health frustrated efforts to get the epidemiology unit to speak on the matter as the Director, Public Health, one Bubuce said only the Permanent Secretary or Director Clinical Services has the right to speak on the matter but confirmed off record.
